The End of the NCAA?

Two heavy-hitter college coaches (one in football and one in hoops) recently came just short of saying that the power conferences can get along just fine with out the guidance of the great overseer, the NCAA.

Has the NCAA lived out it’s usefulness?  With the creation of conference networks, the direct relationship between the power conferences and the television networks seem to suggest that the universities can broker their own deals without the assistance of the governing body.

Is it time for the major conferences to make a break?  What about the non-FBS schools?  Conference Realignment may have cooled off for the time being, but are we on the verge of something even more earth shattering?
